Breville Barista Express Impress Review

Assisted tamping removes the hardest part of home espresso. The 54mm portafilter is the trade-off to understand first.

Why tamping is the thing worth automating

Ask anyone whose home espresso is inconsistent and the fault is usually the same: an uneven puck. Water finds the path of least resistance, channels through the weak spot, and the shot comes out sour and thin no matter what you do to the grind.

The Impress mechanism handles this with a lever that applies consistent force and levels the bed. It is the reason this machine has the reputation it does among people who have never pulled a shot before — it removes the variable that takes everyone else weeks to control.

The dosing trick nobody talks about

The second-cleverest thing here is quieter. The machine tracks how much coffee actually ended up in the basket and adjusts the next dose to compensate. Over-dosed slightly? The next one comes down.

In practice it means the machine converges on a repeatable shot over the first few pulls of a new bag, rather than leaving you to chase it with a scale and a notebook.

54 millimetres

This is the decision that determines whether you keep this machine for two years or ten. The commercial standard is 58mm. Breville's is 54mm. Nearly every bottomless portafilter, precision basket, distribution tool and tamper you will read about on a forum is sized for 58.

There are 54mm accessories. There are fewer of them, they cost more, and the good ones are frequently out of stock. If your ambition is to keep upgrading, this machine has a ceiling built into its geometry.

Mess and maintenance

On finer settings the grinder scatters. Not catastrophically, but enough that owners describe wiping the dosing area as part of the daily routine. Anyone moving from capsules should know that going in.

Longer term, the recurring notes in owner reviews are grinder burr wear and steam wand seals at the two-to-three-year mark under daily use. Not unusual for the category, but worth knowing this is a machine with consumable parts rather than an appliance you install and forget.

What we liked
  • Assisted tamping levels the puck for you — it removes the biggest single source of beginner channelling
  • Intelligent dosing corrects the next grind based on how the last one went, which is quietly clever
  • Integrated conical burr grinder with 25 settings and a ThermoJet heater that's ready in seconds
  • The manual steam wand makes real microfoam, not the stiff bubbles most machines at this price produce
What we didn't
  • 54mm portafilter is not the 58mm commercial standard, so most aftermarket baskets and tampers won't fit
  • Fine grind settings throw grounds around the dosing area; owners describe a daily wipe-down as routine
  • The 67 oz tank empties fast if you're making drinks for more than two people
  • Owner reports of grinder burr and steam-wand seal wear inside two to three years of daily use are common enough to note
The catch

Breville has solved the beginner's problem — bad tamping — and in doing so built a machine you will outgrow in a specific way. When you want a bottomless portafilter, a precision basket, or a better tamper, the 54mm format means your options are Breville's options.

You already know you'll want 58mm commercial accessories. Buy a machine that takes them and a separate grinder instead.

The verdict

A forgiving route into real espresso, at the cost of a dead-end accessory ecosystem. At $649.95 the closest alternative worth weighing is the De'Longhi La Specialista Arte (~$700), and the honest answer is that the decision comes down to the trade-offs above rather than to any single number.
