Who we are

About WeBuyTheHype

A small independent testing outfit with an expensive habit and a public returns ledger.

WeBuyTheHype started from a simple irritation: almost nobody writing product recommendations online had used the product. The rankings were assembled from spec sheets, the "testing" was a synonym for reading, and the enthusiasm was suspiciously evenly distributed across every item in the list.

So we built the version we wanted to read. We buy everything at retail, we use it for weeks, and we write down what actually went wrong. The name is the joke and the method: we buy the hype, literally, so you can find out whether it was worth it before you do.

What we cover

Home and floor care, audio, cameras, kitchen equipment, wearables, mobility, power, and the software and services that have quietly become as expensive as hardware. We follow the products people actually spend real money on rather than whatever launched this week.

The people

Ben Hollis — Deputy Editor. Runs testing across the site and keeps the ledger of what we bought and what we returned. Ben is the reason there are numbers in these articles.

Dana Ruiz — Senior Home Editor. Fifteen years testing home appliances, eight of them running a lab that measured suction rather than vibes.

Marcus Vance — Audio & Video Editor. Former live-sound engineer. Measures rooms before he measures speakers, and will talk about HDMI port counts unprompted.

Priya Raghunathan — Imaging Editor. A working photographer for twelve years before she started writing about the gear. Shoots every camera on a real paid job before filing.

Tom Okafor — Mobility Editor. Commutes 14 miles each way, year round, on whatever he is testing.

Elise Grady — Kitchen Editor. Trained as a barista, cooked professionally for six years, now calibrates grinders for a living.

Nadia Sorensen — Health & Wellness Editor. Covers health hardware and the claims made about it, and reads the clinical literature behind the marketing.

How we pay for it

Affiliate commission, and nothing else. No display ads, no sponsored content, no paid rankings. The full accounting is on our ethics page, including the parts that are inconvenient for us.

Our standing offer

If we recommend something and you buy it and it is wrong, tell us. We would rather rewrite an article than defend one.

What we bought this week

One email, every Thursday. What arrived, what we kept, what went back, and the one thing we'd actually buy again. No sponsored slots, ever.
