The Best Air Purifiers for Allergies, Smoke and Pet Dander

The square-footage number on the box is calculated at an air-change rate you don't want. Here's how to size one properly.

The number that matters is CADR relative to your actual room size, not the marketing square footage on the box, which is usually calculated at a lower air-change rate than you'd want for allergies or wildfire smoke. Most buyers undersize, then run the thing on a loud high setting permanently — a properly sized unit runs quietly on low around the clock instead. Filter replacement cost is the real long-term expense: a cheap purifier with expensive proprietary filters often costs more over three years than a pricier one with cheap filters. And placement matters more than people think. A purifier wedged in a corner behind an armchair performs dramatically worse than the same unit with open airflow.

How we picked

We compared third-party CADR ratings against manufacturer claims, logged particle counts at one, three and eight hours in three room sizes, and calculated three-year filter cost for every model. All five are current-production units with readily available replacement filters.

Coway

Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty

The long-running gold standard mid-size purifier, and it keeps winning for unglamorous reasons.

Why it wins
  • True HEPA plus real-time air quality monitoring and an auto mode that actually adjusts fan speed sensibly

  • Years of proven reliability, a huge installed base, and filters you can find anywhere
The catch
  • Filters run $50-70 a year, which is real money against the purchase price
  • The plastic housing feels less premium than newer smart-connected rivals at similar money
